Dining miscommunication

One of my friend’s was invited to lunch by her boyfriend. They enjoyed a lunch at a Mexican Catina. She ordered modestly and he got a more expensive entree.
They ate and enjoyed a nice conversation.
Soon after they finished eating, the check arrived. There was an ackward pause. No one went in for the bill. A few moments later she asked her boyfriend if he wanted to spilt the check.
He looked at her in shock and told her he assumed she would treat him. He was under the impression they were celebrating a work bonus she recently received. She had no clue and planned on using the extra money to pay off a charge card.
This very embarassing moment could have been avioded with better communication. Has this ever happened to you? What did you do?
